Title: Child and Youth Care Worker

Reports to: Home/Program Manager

Job summary

Reporting to the assigned Home/Program Manager, the Child & Youth Care Worker provides a home like environment for children/youth in care and follows the written plan of care as developed by the Program Management Team, while providing safe and supportive care to children, youth, and families. This care may be provided in a variety of community home or residential care settings.

Summary of essential job functions

  • Assist in the day to day management of the home including household routines, chores, and meal preparation.

  • Participate and contribute to the plan of care for each child/youth.

  • Follow behavioural support and intervention guidelines including crisis intervention and related documentation.

  • Communicate and engage with the child/youth in an appropriate manner.

  • Communicate effectively with families, Social Workers, and co-workers in a professional manner and maintain appropriate personal presentation at all times.

  • Plan and supervise recreational and community activities.

  • Maintain scheduling and transportation of child/youth to medical, dental, and other necessary appointments.

  • Report and document incidents using the appropriate forms and communication.

  • Prepare daily shift reports with detailed documentation of child/youth activity and the care provided.

  • Adhere to and enforce Blue sky’s code of conduct.

  • Report all Occupational Health and Safety hazards and related issues and follow OH&S guidelines.

  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and employer provided training.

  • Other duties in keeping with the role of providing responsible and supportive care to children.

Minimum requirements

  • Completion or near completion (3 years minimum) of a university degree in Social Work, Education, Psychology, or Sociology, OR community college studies pertaining to family dynamics, OR Child and Youth Care Worker Diploma.

  • Crisis Prevention Intervention Training AND/ OR Therapeutic Crisis Intervention Training.

  • Current Record of Conduct and Vulnerable Sector Check.

  • Current First Aid Certificate.

  • Children, Seniors and Social Development (CSSD) Record Check.

Abilities required

  • Ability to work 12 hour shifts, with a mixture of days, nights, and weekends; working a rotational schedule.

  • Ability to work in a variety of work locations.

  • Ability to work as part of a team or independently.

  • Excellent decision making and problem solving skills.

  • Good communication skills, both oral and written.

  • Must be caring, enjoy working with others, have a good work ethic, and possess a positive attitude.

  • Ability to build good relationships with the child/youth in care.
